This is an “European” clash in every sense of the term. An English team with a Spanish manager with players from Norway, Holland, Wales, Finland, Ireland play a hardcore French outfit. Liverpool are no strangers to European competitions, and will be looking to consolidate on their European form while Bordeaux are making a comeback on the European stage and boast of quality players in Dalmat, Micoud and former Red – Smicer.
Premiership form is a big worry for Rafa but his team has always responded well in European competitions. And he would expect no less than full three points as he takes his side to France. Injury worries a plenty for Rafa. Inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard has not travelled with the rest of the squad after he failed to respond to treatment to a hamstring problem. Daniel Agger and Robbie Fowler are confirmed absentees too. Momo Sissoko and Kuyt have both been included in the squad but they are carrying ankle injuries and may not play a huge part in the contest.
Boprdeaux on the other hand are currently fifth in the French League with Jean-Claude Darecheville being their top League scorer. The French outfit don’t have many big names and their team consists mainly of utility players. They have been pretty strong at home though, winning their last three League games at Stade Chaban-Delmas.
My pick: Liverpool are a completely different side when it comes to European games. Perhaps, they are more suited to the European style of football. Even without Gerrard and a host of other people, I dont see them slipping up. Peter “Beanpole” Crouch and Bellamy should cause a lot of problems to the Bordeaux backline and I see the Reds keeping a clean sheet as well. A 2-0 to the Reds with goal in each half from Crouch and Bellamy.
