Sheffield United have left it until late to pull away from the bottom of the premiership, and while they may be sixth bottom they are only three points clear of the last relegation spot, with two games to play (however the Blades have a better goal difference than most around them – worth a point?).
Aston Villa on the other hand are in no mans land, clear of relegation but not in contention for Europe. Many Villa fans are already looking forward to next season, with many expecting a clear out and substantial spending in the close season.
Villa will only be without Shaun Maloney through injury, with Martin O’Neil in the unique position of having a near totally fit squad. Neil Warnock also has a near fit squad, with only striker Rob Hulse out through injury. No excuses for the Blades as they look to secure the three points which will effectively guarantee premiership football next season.
Aston Villa are the form team of the moment with a run of three wins and four draws in their last eight games, while Sheffield United have struggled to win points on their travels – a trend they will need to change if they want to ensure premiership survival as soon as possible.
At this stage of the season it comes down to survival instincts for those at the bottom, and while Warnock has had a mixed season, he is an expert at rallying the troops for one last push. Today’s game will not be easy against a Villa team playing for their positions next season but do not bet against the strong team spirit at Sheffield United and their manager’s survival instincts.
