La Liga: Sevilla vs. Villarreal

The last game of the season will be definitely affected by the FIFA virus that is causing havoc in Spain at the moment. The American cup begins in a couple of weeks and this requires that the players involved miss the end of the Spanish league. In practically every club negotiations are under way to try and get permission for the players to travel to their respective selections the day after, but it looks like quite a few will be absent. For Sevilla, losing Daniel Alves and Kanute could really influence the result. Villarreal will also lose players, including their top striker Diego Forlan. With both teams having more than something to play for (Sevilla the league title and Villarreal a place in UEFA), it is obvious that neither club is happy with the situation. So with both teams likely to lose their best players this game is wide open. Sevilla will be looking to give their fans a final celebration after what has been in amazing year for them, while Villarreal want to top off a fantastic run of wins and finish with classifying for UEFA.
Sevilla have played against Villarreal at their Sanchez Pizjuan stadium five times in the league and won all five games. This doesn’t bode well for Villarreal, who have won their last seven league outings for the first time in their history. Making it eight would be a fine accomplishment for this modest club, but even if they lose they will still stand a chance of getting into UEFA as long as Athletico Madrid don’t win.
Sevilla’s last game against Mallorca ended in a disappointing nil – nil draw. Even more so because both Real Madrid and Barcelona also drew and Sevilla could now be on the top of the league. But the player’s legs seem to be getting heavier in each game which isn’t surprising after the season they have had.
I’m doing for a draw in this match. I don’t think Sevilla have the energy to be a serious threat to Villarreal, and likewise without Forlan, the visitors will lose their most dangerous player.
Prediction: Draw (0-0)
