MLB: Day Seventy-Two

Monday was an off day for most of the teams in the MLB. There were only ten teams in action. However, there were still plenty of good games and one of the most respected records in baseball was chipped away at a little more.

The Seattle Mariners and the Cleveland Indians played a great game Monday night. The Mariners jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning. Slowly the Indians chipped away at the lead by scoring three runs in the 5th inning, two in the 6th, and two in the 8th.  It looked like all the momentum was on the side of the Indians but the Mariners answered by scoring a run in the top of the 9th inning and they hung on for the 8-7 win.

Meanwhile, in the one intra-league match-up, the New York Mets fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s amazing how far the Mets have fallen since they looked like the best team in baseball just about a month ago. Now they’re struggling just to stay in first place in their division. They’ve lost three games in a row and eight out of their last ten.

The Dodgers are just a game out of first place in the National League West. They won on Monday but they haven’t been playing much better baseball than the Mets. The Dodgers are a part of that great three team race in the NL West that also includes the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Also in the NL West, the San Francisco Giants won but that wasn’t the biggest story of the game. The story, as it will be until the record falls, was Barry Bonds going yard for the thirteenth time this season. Bonds now has 747 homers in his career. He trails the great Hank Aaron by only eight homers.

Another story that’s starting to take hold is whether Bonds will be in the All-Star Game or not. It’s being played in San Francisco so he should probably be in the game just to make the home town fans happy. Plus, he’s still one of the most feared hitters in baseball and, barring an injury or a freak occurrence, he’ll break one of the most important and coveted records in all of baseball this year. Yet, there are many people who don’t want him in the game. I think this is much ado about nothing in the media. Bonds will be in the All-Star Game next month.
