MLB: Day One Hundred and Sixty-Six

On Thursday, all the teams that are still alive in the baseball playoff race continued to battle it out. Well, not all of them. Some of the teams had a day to rest. In fact, there were only 8 games played on Thursday. So actually, that meant that many of the teams chasing a playoff spot got to rest up for a weekend that is very important.

One team that did play in the American League was the New York Yankees. The Yanks lost to the Toronto Blue Jays by a score of two to one. So that means that the idle Detroit Tigers were able to gain a half game on the Yankees. Meanwhile, the idle Boston Red Sox were able to extend their lead by a half game. So the Red Sox now lead the American League East by five and a half games.

Over in the National League Central, the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros by a score of six to two. That win allowed the Cubbies to move a half game ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. That’s because the Brew Crew was idle as well.

Meanwhile, the third place team in the NL Central continued to fade into the distance. The St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Cincinnati Reds by a score of five to four. That loss was the Cards seventh straight lose. So just when it seemed like the Cards may make a late charge and take advantage of a weak division, they have stumbled and fallen out of the race completely. The Cards are five games back right now but with the way they’re playing it might as well be twenty-five games.

Finally, in the National League West, the San Diego Padres tried to gain a half game on division leading Arizona because the Diamondbacks were idle as well. However, the Padres actually lost another half game in the race because they lost. So now the Padres are four games behind the young and coming D-Backs. It looks like this race may not come down to the buzzer after all. But this weekend will go a long way in determining that.

This weekend the division races will continue to sort themselves out a little more and we’ll begin to see if there will be any tight races or not. We’ll also get a chance to see what’s happening with the Wild Card teams. Right now the National League looks to be the place with the interesting races but things can change in a hurry. So stay tuned.
