It’s Champions league time again for Sevilla and they have traveled to Bucharest with the firm intention of leaving with their passport almost stamped for the next round and continuing their impressive recent history in European club football. A victory in Romania will practically leave the Spanish club classified in second place behind Arsenal. The team, coached by ex-Sevilla player Manolo Jimenez, go into this game at a particularly sweet moment. After a crisis of results the Andalusian side finally seem to have regained their lost confidence and moral is very high after beating Real Madrid in the Spanish league at the weekend. In that game they showed just how you have to play against a big name team and will be clear favorites against Steaua Bucharest.
The main problem facing Sevilla won’t be from the opposition but from among their own ranks. Their list of injured players is growing alarmingly which is going to force Jimenez to dip into the reserve team to make up his defense. Boulahrouz dropped off the list of players after not being able to recover in time from his muscle strain, and Fazio, Escude and Javi Navarro will also be absent along with Maresca and Duda.
Steaua Bucharest have played against Sevilla quite a few times already and I doubt if they are relishing having to play them again so soon. They lost in both legs of the UEFA cup last season and have just lost again to Sevilla in the last Champions league game. They have currently bottom of Group H with zero points and are on the threshold of being eliminated. Added to this their poor league form where they are in seventh position and struggling to win games, it comes as no surprise to see the Spanish club looking like wolves closing in for the kill.
I’m going for a Sevilla win here in this game. Their squad is just too strong for the Romanian side and shouldn’t have too many problems overcoming them. The period of defeats they went through earlier on in the season is well and truly over after five wins in the last seven games in which they scored sixteen goals. Too much for Steaua then, who will be lucky to get into the UEFA cup.
Prediction: Away win (1-3)
