Game : Chelsea (PRM) vs Southend United ( League One)
Competition : English FA Cup
Venue : Stamford Bridge, London
Date : Saturday, 3 January, 2009
Kickoff : 15.00 GMT
Southend will look to produce a repeat of their Nov 2006 shock win over Manchester United when they visit the Bridge this Sunday for a third round FA Cup meeting against Chelsea.
Chelsea are second in the league, but have won only one of their last four games. In their last league game, they were caught napping at set plays, and ended up drawing 2-2 at West London neighbours Fulham. Boss Luis Felipe Scolari might field his strongest eleven in order to avoid David slaying another Goliath. Captain John Terry is suspended, so Frank Lampard should wear the captains’ armband.
Chelsea form- last five games- all competitions-( Scorers indicated in brackets)
Fulham 2-2 Chelsea ( Frank Lampard*2)
Chelsea 2-0 WBA ( Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba)
Everton 0-0 Chelsea
Chelsea 1-1 West Ham ( Nicolas Anelka)
Chelsea 2-1 Cluj ( Salomon Kalou, Didier Drobga)
Southend beat Luton Town 3-1 in the second round of the FA Cup. Junior Stanislas scored twice in that game for the Shrimpers, with James Walker scoring the third. They had earlier beaten AFC Telford, but not before the Blue Square North side forced a replay. Southend are going through a very bad patch. They have scored only once in their last six league games, a fact that will worry manager Steve Tilson
Southend form- last five games- all competitions
MK Dons 2-0 Southend
Southend 1-0 Northampton ( Junior Stanislas)
Hartlepool 3-0 Southend
Southend 0-1 Huddersfield
Leicester 3-0 Southend
It is certainly a tough task for Southend. Players like Jean Francois Christophe will have to play out of their skins if the Shrimpers are to upset the Blues.
With Scolari fielding his best 11, I don’t quite see Chelsea losing.
Chelsea 4-0 Southend ( Lampard, Ballack, Deco, Anelka)
