Game : FC Copenhagen (Den) vs Manchester City (Rus)
Competition : UEFA Cup Round of 32
Venue : Parken Stadium, Denmark
Date : Thursday, February 18, 2009
Kickoff : 19.00 UK Time
Manchester City travel to Denmark this Thursday to take on Ståle Solbakken’s FC Copenhagen in a round of 32 encounter.
City will welcome back Shaun Wright Phillips and Richard Dunne to their lineup for Thursday. However Micah Richards and Robinho are injury doubts. But given the lethargic display Robinho gave last week against Portsmouth, his presence might not make much of a difference against Copenhagen. Nigel de Jong is ineligible, but Shay Given, Wayne Bridge and Craig Bellamy are expected to get their first UEFA Cup starts.
Man City form last five games- all competitions
Portsmouth 2-0 Man City
Man City 1-0 Middlesbrough ( Craig Bellamy)
Stoke City 1-0 Man City
Man City 2-1 Newcastle ( Craig Bellamy, Shaun Wright Philips)
Man City 1-0 Wigan ( Pablo Zabaleta)
Copenhagen coach Ståle Solbakken’s rant at Man City, accusing them of ” killing football” with their spending power, has set up this game quite nicely. Copenhagen finished third in their group. Brazilian striker Cesar Santin, who scored three goals for Copenhagen in the group stages, is an injury doubt.
Copenhagen’s recent friendly games have seen them beat Dinamo Moscow, Cartagena, Lyngby and Stabaek.
The Copenhagen pitch is similar in size to Portsmouth and Stoke’s. Man City lost to both those teams in the Premier League.
Man City struggled against Midtjylland earlier in the qualifying stages of the UEFA Cup. This won’t be easy for City, and despite their superiority on paper, I’d be wary of putting them up as favourites for this one.
FC Copenhagen 1-1 Man City ( Libor Sionko/Craig Bellamy)
