NCAA: Conference Tourneys Tip Off

This isn’t the calm before the storm. This isn’t a week where teams rest before they get it going for the NCAA Tournament next week. This IS the week that most teams play their conference tournaments. And the two most intriguing conference tournaments are the Big East and the ACC.

As we’ve touched on before, the Big East is a huge conference with 16 teams in it. This year, for the first time ever, all 16 teams are in the Big East Tournament. So, the bottom 8 teams have to start playing on today. The next 4 teams play the winners of the 4 games from today. And then the top 4 teams will play the winners of Wednesday’s games.

Want to look for an upset today? The St. John’s Red Storm has a really good chance of upsetting the Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas recently lost to the Red Storm and the Hoyas are a team that just can’t get it together. Now they have to play St. John’s at Madison Square Gardens, the home court of the Red Storm.

Already, as this blog is being written, the Cincinnati Bearcats lost to the Depaul Blue Demons. That’s the Bearcats who were on the bubble to make the tournament and the Blue Demons who didn’t win one game in Big East play this year. Now, they’ve won their opening game in the Big East Tournament.

So the Big East Tournament has already made a splash and expect more to come.

The ACC Tournament will tip off on Thursday. There are really only 4 teams that even have any chance to win this tourney. They are UNC, Duke, Wake Forest, and Florida State. Perhaps I’d throw Clemson into that group too. But expect UNC to win the tourney without too much of a problem.

So who will win the Big East tourney? Well, I would have to go with UConn. But also look for Louisville to lose before the Championship Game. Just a hunch but I bet Louisville loses in the quarters or in the semis.
