Game : Aab Aalborg vs Manchester City
Competition : UEFA Cup Round of 16- Second Leg ( Manchester City lead 2-0 from the first leg)
Date : Thursday, March 19, 2009
Venue : Energi Nord Arena, Denmark
Manchester City have put one foot into the last eight of the UEFA Cup, and should put their second foot in it when they travel to Denmark to take on Aab Aalborg for the second leg of their UEFA Cup round of 16 clash.
City ran out comfortable winners at Eastlands in the first leg, with Felipe Caicedo and Shaun Wright Phillips scoring in the first half. Craig Bellamy has not travelled with the squad to Denmark despite rumours that he could make a surprise return, while Nigel de Jong is ineligible. The worst of Vincent Kompany’s toe problem has been seen off, and the Belgian will play in the second leg.
Robinho was horribly off colour when City were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea at the Bridge. Country mate Elano faired no better, and both will have a chance at redemption against Aalborg.
Manchester City form- last five games- all competitions
Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City
Man City 2-0 Aalborg ( Felipe Caicedo, Shaun Wright Phillips)
Man City 2-0 Aston Villa ( Elano,Shaun Wright Philips)
West Ham 1-0 Man City
Man City 2-1 FC Copenhagen ( Craig Bellamy*2)
Despite knocking out Deportivo La Coruna in the previous round, Aalborg seem to be staring at the exit door after conceding two goals in the first leg. Thomas Enevoldsen is suspended for this game after picking up another yellow in the first leg.
Aalborg’s domestic form hasn’t been too great either. They could only manage to draw against Sonderjyske. Andreas Johansson scored for Aalborg in that game.
If City score one away goal early, their progress to the next round will be all but a formality. Aalborg will have to play out of their skins to qualify from here, and the reigning Danish champions are yet to beat an English side at home.
Aalborg form- last five games
Aalborg 1-1 Sonderjyske ( Andreas Johansson)
Man City 2-0 Aalborg
Aalborg 1-1 FC Nordsjaelland ( Jeppe Lund Curth)
AC Horsens 0-1 Aalborg ( Andreas Johansson)
Deportivo 1-3 Aalborg ( Luton Shelton, Andreas Johansson, Thomas Enevoldsen)
Verdict:- Aalborg to win 2-1 in Denmark, with Shelton and Due scoring for the Danish side. Ireland to score for City, but City will progress to the next round.
