NCAA: Picking the Tournament Champion

Here is the end of the little five blog entry pack that was all about picking all the winners in every region. From now on we’ll focus in on each day’s match-ups. But before we do, we have to take a look at the Final Four and the eventual National Champion. I know, my picks were really original – all #1 seeds. But I do believe that the 4 top teams are that much better than the rest of the field. But I’ll still be rooting hard for the upsets.

Now, the match-ups in the Final Four will be Louisville against UConn and Pitt against North Carolina. Three Big East teams. And the first match-up is between two Big East powerhouses. Louisville won the season showdown in Louisville. But this game will be on a neutral court.

This is a hard one to pick because I’m still not completely sold on Louisville. I’m also now sold on Thabeet and I still think he might be getting into foul trouble when the games are called tighter in the tournament. In the end I think Louisville’s defense makes the difference in this game. I like Louisville in a very close game.

The next match-up will be UNC against Pitt. Hansbrough will make the difference here. He will get his points and he will also get DeJaun Blair in foul trouble. That will add up to trouble for Pitt and I think UNC will cruise to a double digit win.

So that will lead to a Championship game between Louisville and North Carolina. The difference here will be Ty Lawson’s ability to break the Louisville press and to make them pay on the offensive end. UNC taking some trips off defensively will keep the game close though. But in the end, I like UNC by about 5 points.

Will things turn out that way? Probably not. They don’t call it “March Madness” for nothing. But that’s the way I see it going right now.

Now… let the madness begin!
