Well, day one of the NCAA Tournament is in the books. And there weren’t really any great stories. The only “upset” was Western Kentucky beating Illinois. But Western Kentucky is starting to be like Gonzaga about a decade ago and Illinois is from the Big Ten. Or should I say the Little Ten?
American almost gave Villanova a run but Nova pulled away late. The Zags were in trouble against Akron for a while but they pulled away late too. Memphis looked very shaky against Cal State Northridge and the could’ve easily lost that game. But they won by 11 thanks to a last two minutes that made the game look a lot more comfortable then it really was.
Connecticut, Oklahoma, and North Carolina were all very impressive in their wins. I expect UConn to pretty much roll over Texas Tech in the next round too. However, UNC better be ready for LSU. And Oklahoma better be ready for Michigan. But, truth be told, the Sooners have to love the fact that Michigan beat Clemson.
Duke took care of Binghamton with relative ease. But what’s up with the officiating in this game? Are you kidding me? Any time a Binghamton player came within 3 inches of touching a Duke player they were called for a foul. Was it not enough that Duke had better coaching, better athletes, better size, and more talent? Did the officials really have to keep the whistle in their pocket whenever Duke made contact with a Binghamton player but they constantly blew the whistles on the other end?
Well, now Duke has to play Texas. They’re a team that can challenge Duke and I think Duke falls. I’ve been saying it all season and now we’ll see if I’m right or wrong. Duke is not that good. Within the next two days we’ll find out.
