NCAA: No Surprises in Round 2… Yet

Saturday of the NCAA Tournament saw some great games but no real upsets. There will be at least one low seed advancing today because 12th seeded Arizona is taking on 13th seeded Cleveland State. But almost all the lower seeds lost on Saturday. That means UConn, North Carolina, Memphis, Duke, Oklahoma, Villanova, and Gonzaga all won. The only lower seed to win was #5 Purdue beating #4 Washington.

The best game of the night was the Gonzaga and Western Kentucky. Western Kentucky made a late lay-up to tie the game. But Gonzaga went the length of the court to take the lead themselves. And that gave the Zags the 2 point lead.

As the second round wraps up today, don’t expect the status quo to continue. Remember these were teams that treated us to a few upsets on Friday. Today, the day’s games will tip off with Syracuse and Arizona State battling it out. The Cuse was slightly limited in their first game with Coach Boeheim having flu symptoms and a couple of the Syracuse players also being ill. If the bug spreads to the rest of the team then the Orange will fall. If not, the Orange should move on to play Oklahoma in the Sweet 16.

Dayton and Kansas could be an interesting game to watch. Kansas is young and inconsistent and this Dayton team can play. Also, USC will be a handful for Michigan State. The Trojans have been red-hot in the last couple of weeks. We’ll see if the Spartans can cool them off.

I totally missed on the upsets for yesterday. But they were just possible upsets and, in all fairness, those games were close throughout (Oklahoma and Duke won but it was close). Today the only teams I think definitely won’t lose are Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Louisville. The rest of the games could wind-up being an upset. We will see.

Let the madness continue.
