After crushing Slovakia 4-0, England play Ukraine in a World Cup Group 6 qualifier at Wembley this Wednesday, hoping to keep up their 100% win record.
England beat Slovakia 4-0 on Saturday with goals from Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney (*2) and Frank Lampard. However the win was marred by injuries to Heskey and his replacement Carlton Cole. Fabio Capello has called up Tottenham striker Darren Bent to the squad. It remains to be seen whether Capello starts with Crouch or Bent alongside Rooney. He could also employ Rooney as the sole striker, with Steven Gerrard behind him, but I think he will start with two strikers. Rio Ferdinand could also return to the squad after missing Saturday’s friendly through injury.
Wayne Rooney will earn his 50th cap for England against Ukraine, and Roo looks like a good person to put your money upon. Look at the stats below- he has scored six goals in England’s last five matches.
England form- last five games- all competitions- England scorers in brackets
England 4-0 Slovakia ( Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney*2, Frank Lampard)
Spain 2-0 England
Germany 1-2 England ( Matthew Upson, John Terry)
Belarus 1-3 England ( Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney*2)
England 5-1 Kazakhstan ( Rio Ferdinand, OG, Wayne Rooney*2, Jermain Defoe)
Ukraine are yet to be beaten in Group 6, but have played one game lesser than England. They have seven points from three games, and drew with Croatia in their last game.
Ukraine have conceded only one goal in Group 6 so far- the lowest of any of the teams in the group. Chelsea flop Andriy Shevchenko is still one of their most influential players, and he will be a real threat to England.
Along with Shevchenko, many England fans will also recognise Andriy Voronin, the striker who is currently on loan at Hertha Berlin, and Anatoli Tymoschuk, current Zenit St.Petersburg captain.
Ukraine results- last five games-
Serbia 0-1 Ukraine (Sergei Nazarenko)
Slovakia 2-3 Ukraine (Sergej Valyaev,Yevhen Seleznyov,Artem Milevskiy)
Ukraine 1-0 Norway (Yevhen Seleznyov)
Ukraine 0-0 Croatia
Kazakhstan 1-3 Ukraine ( Sergei Nazarenko*2, Andriy Shevchenko)
I’ll go for a draw here despite England being in fine form. England 1-1 Ukraine, with Lampard and Shevchenko scoring.
