Game : USA v Brazil
Match : Confederations Cup Group B
Venue : Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Pretoria
Date : 18 June, 16.00 South African time.
Brazil could join European champions Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup if they beat Bob Bradley’s USA in Pretoria in their second Group B game.
The Selecao started off well against Egypt, then lost their way in the second half and eventually managed to get all three points thanks to Kaka’s late penalty.
Kaka scored the first and the last goals of the game for Brazil, with Luis Fabiano and defender Juan scoring the other two. But the exertions of their South American qualifying campaign seemed to have an effect on Brazil’s players, who appeared sapped of energy after Egypt breached their defence twice in a minute.
Corinthians star Andre Santos could be in line for a debut if Dunga choses to play him instead of Kleber. Along with Kleber, Elano could also be given a break, with Ramires expected to replace him.
Brazil form- last five games- all competitions- Brazil scorers in brackets
Brazil 4-3 Egypt ( Kaka*2, Luis Fabiano, Juan)
Brazil 2-1 Paraguay ( Robinho, Nilmar)
Uruguay 0-4 Brazil ( Dani Alves, Luis Fabiano*2, Kaka)
Brazil 3-0 Mexico ( Felipe Melo, Luis Fabiano*2)
Ecuador 1-1 Brazil ( Julio Baptista)
The USA gave a decent account of themselves against Italy, but two vital moments snatched the game away from Bob Bradley’s men. The first was Ricardo Clark getting sent off for a foul on Gattuso, and the second was the immediate impact Giuseppe Rossi had after coming on as a second half substitute. Once Italy equalised, it was always going to be difficult for the USA to defend with ten men, and they ended up letting in two more in.
Clark is suspended for this game, and Bradley may have second thoughts with regard to Jonathan Bornstein. The left back was given a torrid time by Mauro Camoranesi against Italy. However Brazil do not use the same formation as Italy’s, and that could work in Bornstein’s favour.
