MLB: Return of the Stars

It’s tough watching a good baseball player struggle. Even if you don’t personally like the player, it’s still a little tough. So, when Alex Rodriguez from the New York Yankees and Magglio Ordonez from the Detroit Tigers were struggling it was a little tough to watch. Both of these players sat the bench for a little while but now they’re back. And another player who is back after being on the disabled list is pitcher John Smoltz.

There are plenty of fans out there who can’t stand A-Rod. In fact, he’s a player that you either love or hate. He missed time at the beginning of the season because of an injury. When he returned the Yankees caught fire but he did not. He was only hitting around .200. So, the Yankees decided to sit A-Rod for a little while. Now that he’s returned, he looks like he might just have his swing back. Last night A-Rod went 3 for 5 last night, drove in 4 runs, and hit a homer. He was right in the middle of the Yankees scoring a bunch of runs.

Meanwhile, Ordonez hasn’t been struggling quite as bad as A-Rod. His average is around .270. However, he hasn’t been hitting homers and he has been hitting very well with runners in scoring position. Plus he’s grounded into a ton of double plays. Well, Magglio sat for a couple games and now he’s back and swinging the bat better. Magglio ripped 2 hits on Wednesday and he hit a homer yesterday. That was huge and has Tigers fans hoping he starts hitting with power again.

Finally, John Smoltz made his debut with the Boston Red Sox yesterday. It wasn’t what he hoped for. However, Smoltz did say that he was pleased overall and he liked the way he threw the ball. If Smoltz can regain his usual form, or even come close to it, then the Red Sox (who enjoy a 4 game lead in the AL East) will be even tougher to overcome in the division. But just about everyone has to be rooting for Smoltz. He’s a likable guy who has also been a great pitcher. I wouldn’t bet against Smoltz being much better in his next outing.
