MLB: Hey Tigers… Those Objects in Your Rearview Mirror are Closer Than They Appear

Well, it looks like we might have another race in baseball. As I’ve mentioned before, the American League Central is once again up for grabs. Just a little over a week ago it looked like the Detroit Tigers would run away with the division. Now, thanks to their pitching letting them down, the Tigers will have to fight to win the division.

As I write this the Minnesota Twins are just 4 games behind the Tigers. And they have a huge series coming up this weekend. Plus, these 2 teams will meet again for a 4 game set at the end of September and the beginning of October. But it will be this series this weekend that will decide a lot. If the Twins win the series then they’ll certainly be within striking distance with just over a dozen games to play. But if the Tigers win the series then they will be in good shape.

The amazing thing about this race is that the Tigers finally got the hitting they were seeking all season but not their pitching is letting them down. The best pitcher on this staff is 20 year old rookie Rick Porcello. Justin Verlander has been awesome more of the season but he’s faltered lately too. Then Edwin Jackson and Jarod Washburn have been embarrassing these past few weeks. The Tigers bullpen has been too spotty.

Now, I still think this is obviously the Tigers division to lose. But with so many games left against the Twins and the Chicago White Sox (a team that’s only 6 games back) this won’t be over until it’s actually over. By that I mean that the Tigers could be 4 games up with 4 to play but the Twins or the White Sox could still catch them.

So, there is now another race besides the NL Wild Card race. But this race could get even more interesting after this weekend.
