Game :- Liverpool ( 8th- 27 points) vs Wolves ( 12th- 19 points)
Date :- Saturday, December 26, 2009- Boxing Day
Venue :- Anfield, Liverpool
Kickoff time :- 17.30 UK time
Liverpool will be hoping to turn around their fortunes when they host in form Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Saturday. The Reds are languishing in eighth at this moment, and Wolves, who have won only once in their last twenty two visits to Anfield, will fancy their chances of adding to Rafa Benitez’s woes.
The Reds slumped to defeat against Portsmouth last weekend. Worse, Javier Mascherano was sent off in that game, and the Argentine captain starts the first of a four game ban this weekend. Alberto Aquilani could make his first league start of the season against Mick McCarthy’s side.
Liverpool form- last five games- most recent first- Liverpool scorers in brackets
Portsmouth 2-0 Liverpool
Liverpool 2-1 Wigan ( David Ngog, Fernando Torres)
Liverpool 1-2 Arsenal ( Dirk Kuyt)
Liverpool 1-2 Fiorentina ( Yossi Benayoun)
Blackburn 0-0 Liverpool
As you can see, Liverpool have won only once in their last five games. Fernando Torres is just a goal shy of fifty career league ones for the Reds, and you could certainly back him to score against Wolves.
Wolves have started to string together a number of good results and the Midlands outfit have moved out of the relegation zone. They are currently sitting in 12th- just four places and eight points behind Liverpool.
Wolverhampton Wanderers- last five games- most recent first- Liverpool scorers in brackets
Wolves 2-0 Burnley ( Milijas, Kevin Doyle)
Man United 3-0 Wolves
Tottenham 0-1 Wolves ( Kevin Doyle)
Wolves 2-1 Bolton ( J.Craddock, Milijas)
Wolves 0-1 Birmingham City
While Liverpool are currently struggling for form, I’d have to back them to get the better of Wolves. Liverpool have won five of their last six Boxing Day clashes in the Premier League, and this one is at Anfield.
Verdict :- Liverpool 2-1 Wolves ( Torres, Benayoun/ Doyle)
