The Pakistani bowlers did well to restrict Australia to a little over 170 in the fixture between the two sides in Colombo a few days. Despite some batting hiccups, important knocks from youngster Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal guided Pakistan home with plenty to spare.
There are still some problems in the Pakistani batting to be sorted out. Asad Shafiq has done well in the two games he’s got an opportunity in, but none of the other batsmen have even managed to register a single century in this tournament.
It’s mostly been the variety of their bowling attack, with skipper Shahid Afridi leading from the forefront, that has saved Pakistan on more than one occasion in this tournament. Afridi is the tournament’s leading wicket taker, although his shot selection as batsman, like in the game against Australia, has left much to be desired.
The West Indies looked an ordinary team without Chris Gayle against India on Sunday evening. Darren Bravo and Ramnaresh Sarwan tried their best, but the Windies were left ruing a stunning middle order collapse that allowed India to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Gayle and paceman Kemar Roach both sat out the India game, but should feature in this game.
Verdict:- West Indies failed to beat any of the biggies in their group ( South Africa, England and India), and only qualified because of their superior net run rate over Bangladesh. They’ve not quite been able to get their act together and Pakistan should seal their spot in the semis with a victory here. The winner of this fixture faces the winner of the India-Australia quarterfinal.
