Paraguay were seconds away from topping Group C against Venezuela, but they inexplicably squandered a 3-1 lead in the dying seconds of the game to draw 3-3. The result saw them drop to third in the group, and as the second best third place team, earned them a last eight clash with the Brazilians.

Paraguay also have injury doubts over star striker Roque Santa Cruz, who strained a leg muscle before half time in the Venezuela game and had to be replaced by Nelson Haedo Valdez.

Paraguay form- last five games- most recent first- Paraguay scorers in brackets

Paraguay 3-3 Venezuela ( Alcaraz, Barrios, Riveros)
Paraguay 2-2 Brazil ( Santa Cruz, Haedo Valdez)
Paraguay 0-0 Ecuador
Paraguay 0-0 Chile
Paraguay 2-0 Romania ( Haedo Valdez, R.Santa Cruz)

When Brazil and Paraguay met earlier in the tournament, Brazil were a minute away from defeat before substitute Fred saved the blushes. After two initial draws against Venezuela and Paraguay, Brazil’s misfiring strike force finally got its act together against Ecuador, with Neymar and Alexandre Pato both netting braces in the 4-2 win over their South American rivals.

AC Milan star Thiago Silva is a doubt for the Brazilians and will undergo a late fitness test. Luizao or David Luiz will replace him the heart of defence, should he not recover.

Brazil 4-2 Paraguay ( Neymar*2, Alexandre Pato*2)
Brazil 2-2 Paraguay ( Jadson, Fred)

Verdict:- Although Paraguay traditionally tend to do well against bigger teams, a Brazilian team on song will be difficult to beat. Expect a tight game.
