Uruguay advanced to the final thanks to a 2-0 win over Peru. Both goals of the game were scored by Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and La Celeste were good value for their win at the end. While Uruguay have not been at their best in the tournament, their big names on paper, coupled with the fact that they finished fourth at last year’s World Cup makes them favourites for this tournament.
Diego Forlan is yet to fire for Uruguay this Copa America and the World Cup’s Golden Ball winner will be hoping to stamp his influence in the final. Walter Gargano deputised for the suspended Diego Perez in midfield against the Peruvians but is likely to make way for the latter on Sunday evening.
Uruguay form- last five games- most recent first- Uruguay scorers in brackets-
Peru 0-2 Uruguay ( Luis Suarez*2)
Argentina 1-1 Uruguay ( Diego Perez)
Uruguay 1-0 Mexico ( Alvaro Pereira)
Uruguay 1-1 Chile ( Alvaro Pereira)
Uruguay 1-1 Peru ( Luis Suarez)
Paraguay, coincidentally enough, are also coached by a Uruguayan. They have made it to the final without winning a single game- drawing three games 0-0 and the others 2-2 and 3-3 respectively. They were somewhat fortunate to beat Venezuela in the semis especially when Albiroja keeper Justo Villar was the busier of the two keepers on the day. Villar’s save of Franklin Lucena’s penalty in the shootout proved vital as Paraguay won 5-3 on penalties. Jonathan Santana is suspended for Paraguay, who will however have Antolin Alcaraz back.
Verdict:- Uruguay to win this one. They have lived under the shadow of Argentina and Brazil for a long time and this represents an excellent opportunity for them to prove that the World Cup performance was not a flash in the pan act.
Uruguay 2-0 Paraguay ( Forlan, Suarez)
