Manchester City have proved buying talent won’t be the only way they are going achieve world domination, with equal importance on nurturing that talent that has come through the ranks. Micah Richards was one of those who has come though from the youth teams into the first team, establishing himself as an essential part of Roberto Mancini’s plans. The versatile defender has been rewarded for his ever-improving performances in the first-team with a new lengthy contract, with Richards reportedly close to putting pen on paper, giving the side a real boost as they look to improve their standing in the Premier League betting.
While the 23-year old was already tied down to the club for the foreseeable future, the club wanted to show their commitment to Richards and have now handed him improved terms, with the defender close to reaching 200 appearances in a City shirt. The right-back has established himself as an ever-present in Mancini’s back four and now looks set to continue that well into the future at Eastlands. While Richards had never made any noises about wanting to leave the club, he will be delighted to commit his future to the City, who are also among the favourites in the Champions League betting.
With the right-back position at City now under Richards’ possession, the 23-year old will now be keen to do the same thing with the England jersey. Glen Johnson is currently Fabio Capello’s first choice in the right-back slot but the Italian won’t be able to ignore Richards if he continues his early season form. Rather than looking like a centre-back playing at right-back, Richards has started the season looking every bit a natural wing-back as Liverpool’s Johnson.
Bombing up and down the flanks, has seen Richards add an attacking aspect to his game and his City team-mates have been benefiting in their impressive start to the new campaign. City fans will be delighted to have their home-grown defender as part of their team for the next few years at least.
