This is undoubtedly the biggest clash of the weekend, with many believing that victory for Manchester City will all but guarantee their Premier League crown. Roberto Mancini has constantly claimed that his side are still underdogs in the race for the title, with many of his concerns due to the nature of Sunday’s opponents. Newcastle have proved to be one of the strongest teams in the division this term and with the lure of Champions League football still on offer, the Magpies certainly won’t be making it easy for their opponents.
With Newcastle currently level on points with 4th place Tottenham, Alan Pardew knows that his side have to finish the campaign strongly if they are to bring Champions League football to the Sports Direct Arena Stadium. As it stands, the Magpies have an inferior goal difference, meaning they are certainly the underdogs as the campaign draws to a conclusion. However, recent form is certainly on their side, with the club stringing some fantastic results together over recent times. While they were thrashed 4-0 by Wigan a couple of weeks ago, that result was incredibly unexpected with the club winning seven of their last eight games. Moreover, having brushed aside Chelsea in 2-0 fashion during the week, confidence is likely to be high amongst supporters as they prepare to host Manchester City.
City meanwhile know that two victories from their last two games will steal the Premier League title away from their rivals. Even though they were an incredible eight points away from 1st spot just several weeks ago, recent results mean that City are now in the driving seat and just need to collect maximum points from their last two games. Having put together a miserable string of results several weeks ago, Roberto Mancini’s men will certainly approach this game full of confidence having won their last four in the Premier League. With their latest victory being a 1-0 result over United, there is no doubt that morale must be exceptionally high in the Manchester City camp even though they are about to embark on a real banana skin of a fixture.
Newcastle have been handed some good news ahead of the clash, with Cheick Tiote defying the odds and being available for selection after being stretched off in their last game. Elsewhere, Danny Simpson could also feature, although he is still poised for a late fitness test. Manchester City on the other hand have a huge worry, with Joe Hart a major doubt having sustained a foot injury in City’s last encounter. Should Hart manage to pull through, the visitors are all but certain to keep the same starting eleven that overcame Manchester United on Monday.
Even though Newcastle are in truly fantastic form, we think Manchester City will take the points in this clash. Roberto Mancini’s side know that they simply cannot afford another slip up and bearing this in mind, our prediction is a narrow 2-1 win for City.
