Wigan v Chelsea Preview

There was once a time where Wigan were classed as massive underdogs whenever they fared against Chelsea, yet following on from last season’s events the situation has changed somewhat. The Latics recorded a 1-1 draw with the Blues and after being desperately unlucky to suffer a 2-1 defeat in the reverse fixture, Roberto Di Matteo’s side will certainly be traveling to the DW Stadium with plenty of caution.

With Roberto Martinez still at the helm at Wigan, most Latics supporters are probably very happy with how their summer has turned out. Despite intense speculation linking the Spaniard with a switch to either Liverpool and Aston Villa, Wigan have kept hold of their high-profile manager. However, not all of their squad remains intact and following the departure of Hugo Rodallega, Martinez is also bracing himself for Victor Moses to leave with the former Crystal Palace winger making no secret of his desire to join opponents Chelsea. However, the DW Stadium outfit have managed to strengthen in certain areas and with Martinez seemingly being a master of keeping the club afloat, supporters will still approach the new season with plenty of confidence.

Chelsea meanwhile have experienced a busy summer and Roman Abramovich has invested heavily following the Blues’ memorable victory in the Champions League back in May. The Stamford Bridge outfit have been the big spenders of the top flight although with that, already the pressure is mounting on Roberto Di Matteo. Having been handed the reins on a permanent basis, Blues chiefs will be expecting a season of success with the club competing in so many trophies. While Abramovich always seems to put more emphasis on European glory over domestic, there’s still no doubt that he will be expecting a title charge from the Blues following last season’s lacklustre Premier League performance.

Even though Victor Moses has been linked with a move away from Wigan for practically the whole campaign, the winger has still managed to make the squad against his suitors Chelsea. Elsewhere, Roberto Martinez has a couple of issues as Ivan Ramis and James McCarthy struggle with hamstring and back problems respectively. Chelsea on the other hand have received a big let-off with Branislav Ivanovic poised to play even though he was shown a red card last week – with suspensions not applying to pre-season cards. In other news, Roberto Di Matteo is sweating on the fitness of Marko Marin as the new signing struggles with a hamstring strain.

While Wigan may have taken the plaudits against Chelsea last term, we can’t see the same happening this time around. It’s a new campaign and with the Blues strengthening so much, our tip is going to be a 2-0 win for the visitors.
